Upcoming overnight Macdonald Bridge closure April 4

Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicles overnight this weekend to allow crews to begin scaffolding work for the second phase of Project LifeSpan. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross during this time but may face delays.

Closure Details:

• Date: Saturday, April 4 at 8 p.m. to Sunday, April 5 at 5:30 a.m.
• Location: Angus L. Macdonald Bridge
• Impacted users: All vehicles will be prohibited from the bridge during this time.  Pedestrians and cyclists may face delays and are expected to obey all directions from Traffic Control. Motorists are reminded they can travel across the MacKay Bridge as an alternate route.

The second phase of Project LifeSpan will see the same work successfully completed last year on the Dartmouth Tower carried out at the Halifax Tower. Decades of old paint will be blasted away, with special environmental containment measures in place to ensure debris does not fall on people, vehicles, surrounding properties, or into Halifax Harbour. Once exposed, the bare steel will undergo thorough inspection and any necessary repairs before a specialized three-layer protective coating is applied to help guard the steel from the elements for decades to come.

Cyclists and pedestrians are reminded that once work begins, this will be an active construction site for the duration of the project. There will be an increased number of workers and equipment in this area. Cyclists are urged to exercise caution and obey all posted traffic signs and instructions throughout the construction season.

Project LifeSpan is a multi-year initiative focused on inspecting, repairing, and recoating key structural steel components of the Macdonald Bridge to help ensure the long-term safety and reliability of this critical transportation link.
