Macdonald Bridge overnight closures required for asphalt repairs July 7, July 8

July 7, 2026

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) advises bridge users that overnight closures of the Macdonald Bridge are required to complete repairs to a section of asphalt on the bridge deck.

Tuesday, July 7

  • Macdonald Bridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic from Tuesday at 8 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8.
  • During the closure, the pedestrian sidewalk will be closed.
  • The bicycle lane will remain open and will operate as a shared pathway for both cyclists and pedestrians. All users are asked to use caution and be respectful of others while sharing space.

When the bridge reopens at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, traffic will be reduced to two lanes – one lane in each direction – while the lane undergoing repair remains closed.

Wednesday, July 8

  • The Macdonald Bridge will close again to all vehicle traffic from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 5:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, to allow work to continue.
  • During this closure, both the pedestrian sidewalk and bicycle lane will remain open.

When the bridge reopens Thursday morning, traffic will again be limited to one lane in each direction. The repaired lane is expected to remain closed until later Thursday to allow the new asphalt sufficient time to fully cure and harden before being reopened to traffic.

HHB appreciates the public’s patience as these necessary repairs are completed and encourages bridge users to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Motorists are reminded that the MacKay Bridge remains fully open as an alternate route.
