Macdonald Bridge closed weekend of Oct. 2-5 for Project LifeSpan

Halifax Transit tickets available in advance from Halifax Harbour Bridges

Halifax Harbour Bridges advises that the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists,from 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 2 until 5:30 a.m. Monday, October 5.

During the closure, crews will be dismantling the overhead platform and sidewalk shed which were used to successfully complete work at the Halifax Main Tower. The Halifax Tower project was part of Project LIfeSpan and included blasting decades of old paint, inspection and repairs, and the application of a three-coat protective system designed to safeguard the steel infrastructure for decades to come. Work at the Dartmouth Main Tower was completed last season. HHB will take advantage of the closure to complete other work as required.

  • Free transit tickets are available to pedestrians and cyclists to help reduce weekend inconvenience.
  • Maximum four tickets per person.
  • Tickets can be picked up 24/7 only at the Operations Centre, Macdonald Bridge Administration Building, 125 Wyse Road, Dartmouth.
  • Pick-up begins today.

Motorists are reminded that this closure is happening as the Massachusetts ramp closure continues on the MacKay Bridge continues. The ramp closure supports the Windsor Street Exchange program.

Alternative routes during the temporary ramp closure

  • During the Massachusetts Avenue ramp closure, drivers travelling from the MacKay Bridge toward Robie Street and Downtown Halifax are encouraged to use alternative routes via Windsor Street/Young Street or Barrington Street. 
  • A review of expected traffic patterns indicates these alternative routes are expected to help keep traffic moving while work to construct the new Bayne Street ramp connection is underway.
  • Following the recommended routes and posted detour signage can help improve traffic flow throughout the area while this work is underway.
  • Municipal staff will monitor traffic conditions throughout the closure and make adjustments as needed to optimize traffic flow.
  • Drivers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
