Driving the future: HHB awards GardaWorld toll taking and security services contract

March 4, 2024

Halifax Harbour Bridges has awarded a $2.7-million contract to GardaWorld to provide toll taking and security services at the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay bridges.

Under the contract, Garda will provide 45 staff to the operation, employed as toll takers, bridge patrol and operations rooms supervisors.

The two-year contract can be extended twice, for an additional year each time, for a potential maximum contract length of four years. The contract is effective April 1, 2024.

“We are pleased to be working with such an experienced company that shares our commitment to exceptional security systems, while attaining the highest levels of customer service,” says Halifax Harbour Bridges CEO Tony Wright.

“We are confident GardaWorld will be an excellent partner as HHB continues to fulfill its mandate to provide the means for safe, efficient and reliable cross-harbour transportation for the 32 million vehicles using the bridges annually, as well as for the pedestrians and cyclists who also use the Macdonald Bridge.”

GardaWorld Regional Manager Chris Murray says GardaWorld is honoured to join HHB in this new partnership.

“Together, we are positioned to achieve great things and drive innovation in safety and customer service,” Murray says. “Our shared vision and values promise a cohesive collaboration that will benefit both our organizations, staff and most importantly, our valued community.”

GardaWorld takes over security responsibilities from Commissionaires Nova Scotia who did not bid on the tender.

“Commissionaires began providing security to us when the Macdonald Bridge first opened, almost 70 years ago. We thank them for their service and the important role Commissionaires’ staff played in the history of the bridges,” says Wright.
