Tolls for both Halifax Harbour bridges will end on March 17 so that toll plaza removal can begin. Ending the tolls early will allow work to start on the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge over two weekends in March.

This work will include the removal of toll booths, concrete barriers, and gantries, electrical and electronics removal; resurfacing roadways and reconfiguring lanes.

“Dismantling the toll plazas is a complex process,” says HHB CEO Tony Wright. “We are working with industry specialists and contractors to make sure the work proceeds as efficiently and safely as possible and as quickly as possible.”

Plaza removal will begin at the Macdonald Bridge. Two full weekend closures are planned:

  • Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. to Monday, March 17 at 5:30 a.m.
  • Friday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. to Monday, March 24 at 5:30 a.m.

These closures are weather-dependent.

The pedestrian and bicycle lanes are expected to remain open, although users may encounter short delays for safety reasons.

These closures will cause traffic delays. Give yourself extra time, adjust your route, and avoid peak traffic times.  If possible, choose Metro Transit buses or ferries for travel.

Weekend closure dates have not been finalized for the MacKay Bridge toll plaza removal, although preparatory work will begin this month. It is important to note that one bridge will always be open to vehicles.

Bridge users should exercise caution as the changes are underway. Even outside of the scheduled closures, drivers may encounter increased construction activity, with additional workers and equipment present on the bridges.

HHB remains committed to ensuring the safest and most efficient bridge crossings in this new toll-free environment. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we make these improvements.
