Weekend closure of MacKay planned to start 9 p.m. Friday, June 12; free ferry service available throughout the weekend
June 8, 2026
The A. Murray MacKay Bridge will be closed to all vehicles from 9 p.m. Friday, June 12, until 5:30 a.m. Monday, June 15 to allow crucial maintenance and inspection to take place.
Please note the closure will begin one hour later than the bridge’s typical weekend closure time. This will accommodate traffic related to the FIFA World Cup Canada men’s opening match viewing party taking place at the Garrison Grounds in Halifax.
To help reduce the number of vehicles crossing the harbour during the closure, passengers can travel free on Halifax Transit ferries throughout the weekend, with Halifax Harbour Bridges covering the cost of fares. No tickets are required.
Work scheduled includes:
- Replacement of expansion joint glands
- Full road deck removal in the north lane and selected areas of the south lane to allow detailed inspections
- Various additional inspections and repair work
Motorists should expect traffic delays throughout the weekend, particularly on the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and surrounding roadways. HHB encourages travellers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and exercise patience with fellow drivers.
Residents are also reminded that pedestrians and cyclists can use the dedicated lanes of the Macdonald.
HHB thanks the public for its patience and cooperation while this important work is completed.
